Halloween

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is turning colder (but it’s not yet too cold), the leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and we get to enjoy stuff like pumpkin cobbler (which my beautiful wife has an awesome recipe for). One of favorite things about fall is Halloween, and my family has a few traditions which I would like to share.
The first of these traditions is what we have come to call, “Fall Family Night”. While we try to spend most Friday nights as a family anyway, we always choose one Friday night in October where we do a Halloween related family activity and watch a Halloween movie with the boys. This year, we made (well, Brandy made, I watched) Halloween cookies, which we decorated as a family. Afterward, we watched “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” with the kids.
October is also the time for scary movies. B and I don’t watch many scary movies throughout the year, and for some reason, we tend to relegate our scary movie watching for October. I think most scary movies, with the exception of a few (i.e Paranormal Activity), are cheesy. I just have to be in the right mood, and I think for me, October is the only time of the year when horror movies just don’t seem as cheesy as they normally do. One of my favorites of this genre is Halloween (the original, not the crappy Rob Zombie remake).
Last, but most certainly not least, is my favorite Halloween activity, the glorious tradition of trick-or-treating. For whatever reason, I did not trick-or-treat much as a kid. As such, I make it a point to take the boys trick-or-treating in the neighborhood every year. We start out by going to the Fall Festival that is held at our church every Halloween night. Then, we leave the fall festival and head back to the neighborhood for trick-or-treating. Nick and his cousin, Evan, usually run way ahead, eager to get to the next house and get more candy. Luke, my laid back one, usually stays with me. It’s funny though, Luke always tends to end up with more candy.
